What's My Go To BDSM Bondage Rope?

The best rope for bondage can be hard to find. Especially if you’re new to it. Rope restraint can be both artistic and sexual when you indulge.

One study found that 68.8% of the population was interested in or had performed BDSM behaviors (1). Despite the kinky perspective associated with ropework, Shibari (2) aims to improve intimacy and trust within a couple.

In rope bondage, the rigger ties up the bunny. Erotic ropework (Kinbaku) emphasizes the beauty of the bunny’s bodily form and curves (3). The bound body can be a political statement, art for some, and erotic for others.

Without the right type of rope (and shears), it can look bad and become dangerous. It’s essential you buy the best rope designed for bondage.

Discover the best kind of rope for bondage by reading on…

Interesting fact: Rope bondage comes from Japan. Shibari originated from Hojo-Jutsu – a form of rope torture (4). Shibari (bondage with rope) transformed into Kinbaku, which is the practice of artistic and erotic rope bondage.

Conclusion

Whether for art, erotic pleasure, meditative benefits, or sado-masochistic effects, rope work is a practice that needs to be respected. It’s important to learn about the body and how to sensitively and safely manipulate it.

Rope bondage brings entirely new aspects to a relationship. Emotional, erotic, and it’s also mentally connecting.

Seriously, silk sheets and sateen sheets just don’t cut it when it comes to the perfect sheet for sex. You need more hardy material.

Polyester and microfiber materials are your friends.

These blankets are easy to care for and stop you needing a towel because of staining! There are many brands out there… These are the ultimate.

Out of all the ropes mentioned, I have two favorites:

Think about what you require from your rope, what feels good on your skin. Speak to your Bondage partner and prepare to let loose by getting tied up!

What to consider when buying the best rope for bondage?

Types of bondage ropes

Think about what you want to use the rope for. Will you need a lot of rope? For harnesses and art, you probably will. If you’re going for simple wrist restraints, you won’t need the rope to be as long.

Ropes tend to be anywhere between 16 feet/5 meters up to 32 feet/10 meters.

Interested in harnesses? Check out our best BDSM harness guide.

You can rest assured that the ropes we recommend are strong. If you’re practicing rope restraint a lot, though, you’ll want a long-lasting rope. One where you can rig it securely to carabiners and know that you’re secure.

The best natural rope in terms of strength, I’d say, is hemp. Jute is the weakest.

The strongest of all ropes is nylon!

The ropes I’ve reviewed here will all last you a while. However, I do have quite a few so I spread the love. The best ropes in terms of durability are synthetic ropes.

If you’re going for long-term ropes then these are much better. However natural-fiber ropes have much better grip. A jute rope is often treated with oils especially for the easier merging of your skin and the rope. (Much better than those stripy ropes you get in hardware stores!)

Durability can differ greatly between manufacturers, which is why it’s useful to check out reviews!

Ropes tend to be twisted, single-ply, double-ply, or braided. For bondage, it’s better to use twisted or single-ply ropes.

Single-ply is easy to use and is very bendy so you can work with it easily. Double-ply is stiffer, thicker, and harder to manipulate. It is, however, more durable.

A rope is quite often referred to as having a good “tooth”. This is basically the friction that helps keep your knots in place. Natural materials like jute, hemp, and cotton are exceptionally good on the “tooth” rating! Synthetic ropes tend to be slippy, so not so good.

Both have their pros and cons. With a cotton rope, the knot might hold better, but a nylon rope will feel silky soft on your body.

Ropes vary in softness. This is affected by the material they’re made from as well as the weave. The softest rope is nylon, cotton and hemp come in second, jute comes in last. Jute would be “medium” softness, though, not “hard”.

The more advanced you and your partner are with rope skills, the more you can experiment. Do not use a  bondage mouth gag when you are a total beginner.

As a general rule, I’d suggest beginners go for thicker, softer ropes.

Start simply with wrist bondage to get used to the feel and practice. After this, move onto more advanced knots with longer, thinner rope.

To expand your practice you can start looking into BDSM swings. If you want more information you can read here our fetish fantasy bondage review or my bondage boutique enhancer review.

Synthetic

You mainly get three types of synthetic materials used for ropes:

  • Nylon
  • MFP
  • Hempex.

These are softer and more durable than natural ropes.

Natural

You get mainly:

  • Cotton
  • Hemp
  • Jute

These have better grip and are more planet-friendly. (Cotton knots can be a nightmare to unpick though!)

FAQ

What is the best rope for bondage?

The best rope for bondage really depends on what you and your partner want to use the rope for.

If it’s for light restraint then go for a beginner’s rope rather than more hardcore kinky restraints, like the Shots Ouch! Kinbaku rope. If you want to try more complex poses, knots, and holds, then why not go for the Twisted Monk’s More Than Curious Cotton Kit?

Would you like to try something else? Take a look at our best tape for BDSM guide.

What is the best size of rope for bondage?

The smaller the diameter of the rope, the more it applies concentrated pressure to parts of your body. It’s safest to buy ropes with a diameter 5mm or over. Any lower and there’s an increased likelihood of causing circulatory of nerve damage. However, if you have lots of experience you can use a thinner rope.

In terms of length? It depends on how many knots you want to create!

Where is the best place to get rope for bondage?

I’ve spent a long time trying lots of different ropes with my Kinbaku partner. The ropes I’ve recommended here are the best I can find. Check out the links and see what tickles your fancy. I think Lovehoney, Twisted Monk, and Liberator are probably my favorite brands.

How to best store my bondage rope?

I keep mine in a special box (next to my box of sex toys)! They coil up small, though, so you can put them in the drawer, under the bed, or at the back of the wardrobe!

How to best clean my bondage rope?

Some ropes are machine washable. For the ones that aren’t, use a mild detergent, warm water, and sponge off any marks.

How to soften the new rope?

With use ropes become softer. However, if you need a more instant softening than breaking the rope in on your body, place the rope in a carabiner and pull it gently back and forth a few times.

How do I tie my partner up with the rope?

There are so many beautiful ways you can bind your partner. Some of the ropes on this page come with guides to get you started. Alternatively, there is a world of rope tutorials all over YouTube where you can get simple instructions and plenty of ideas.
